Yammer is now available on Office 365 E plans

Yammer, a social network giant, acquired by Microsoft is now available for use on Office 365. You can use Yammer as a replacement for NewsFeeds in SharePoint Online.This feature is available for E (Enterprise) plans only.

To get the feature, do the following:

1. Log into Office 365 Administration Portal and then go to SharePoint Online Administration Portal.

2. Click on Settings present in the left hand bottom corner

3. Once clicked, in the Enterprise Social Collaboration section choose “Use Yammer.com service”. This update might take up to 30 minutes to complete.

4. Scroll down and click OK. You will be taken back to the SharePoint Online Administration Page.

5. Click on Newsfeed and after couple of seconds, you will see the below screen.

Count the number of external users in SharePoint Online

One of the frequent question that I get when I deliver a session on SharePoint online is “Can I know the number of external users accessing my SharePoint Online site”. And the answer is YES.

All you need to do it run the command Get-SPOExternalUser .This command has options of displaying users from a specific domain.

Office 365 : Password Synchonization available with Directory Synchonization Tool

This is one of the most awaited features for Office 365 users. Till now if we wanted to have password synchonized between onpremise Active Directory and cloud ( office 365) we have to implement ADFS.

But now, with Directory Synchonization tool, you can not only sync user account and properties, but you can also sync password of those user accounts 🙂

To get the lastest Directory Synchronization tool, go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=278924. If you already have installed a previous version of it, you will need to uninstall it and and reinstall the lastest one. There is no upgrade path. You must be running version 6382.0000 or greater of the Directory Sync tool in order to enable the Password Sync feature.

When you install the tool, it will do a full sync from onpremise to cloud. You cannot choose the set of users that will have their passwords synchronized to the cloud. When an on-premises user changes their password, the Password Sync feature will detect and synchronize the changed password, most often in a matter of minutes. NOTE: The synchronization of a password has no impact on currently logged on users. If a user that is logged into a cloud service also changes their on-premise password, the cloud service session will continue uninterrupted. However, as soon as the cloud service attempts requires the user to re-authenticate, the new password needs to be provided. At this point, the user is required to provide the new password – the password that has been recently synchronized from the on-premise Active Directory to the cloud.

Installation of the new version if same as the previous version, except a new screen has been introduced. Below is the snapshot of it.

Office Web Apps Licensing made simple

When we talk about SharePoint 2013 to customers, one of the things they get excited about is the feature of viewing and editing the documents in the browser. Office Web Apps has becomes an integral part of SharePoint and lot of companies have started using it.

One thing to remember is Office Web Apps 2013 is no more like an add-on for SharePoint. Its a seperate product which needs to be installed on a seperate server ( preferred). It can now be used with Exchange Server 2013, Lync 2013 .

So the next question is how do I license Office Web Apps 2013.

  • If you ONLY want to have the functionaly to VIEW the documents in your SharePoint ( and not EDIT them), then you do NOT need any license 🙂 . Just install the product, configure it with SharePoint and you are good to go.
  • If you want to VIEW & EDIT the documents, then you need to have a valid volume license of Office Professional or Office Standard (2010/2013).

So if your users are already using a licensed copy of Office Professional or Office Standard (2010/2013), then you can VIEW and EDIT documents in browser 🙂

NOTE: Office Web Apps includes word web app, excel web app, powerpoint web app and onenote web app. It DOES NOT include word automation service, excel services, visio services, access services.

Linking OneNote pages in SharePoint 2013

During a presentation, one of my customer asked, it is possible to link (hyper-link) a page in onenote which is available in SharePoint 2013. So I thought of giving it a try to see if its possible.

  • Create a SharePoint site, for example a Team Site.
  • In the Quick Lunch Bar you will see Notebook which is the in-built OneNote feature present in SharePoint 2013.

  • Create some pages in it.
  • Once created, right click on the one of the pages and choose Copy link to this Page.

  • You will find the below pop-up box. Copy the link from it

  • Go back to your site, add a webpart called Summary Links and page the above copied link in this web part. Save the Page.
  • Voila!!.. when you link on the link it takes you to the exact page in that OneNote.

Good news!!.. For people looking to sync files from windows explorer view to SharePoint, using Office 2010 or 2007, its possible now!. Microsoft launched SkyDrive Pro client for free, which you can download from here and use it to sync files and folder from your windows explorer to SharePoint on-premise or online. It can also be installed side-by-side with previous versions of Office (Office 2010, Office 2007).
